avast free - update not accessable/working

about a week ago (while still using v5.x) the update process stopped updating. i paid no mind to it until today. i tried to figure out why and couldn’t. vpsupd installed the latest virus file, but auto-update still not working. so i uninstalled v5 and installed v6.0.1000; same problem. uninstalled 6.0.1000, cleaned registry, nothing there with ‘avast’. installed 6.0.1044, it auto-updated to latest virus defs, but auto-update is still not working. firewall (comodo) is not blocking because i can’t update even with it turned off. auto-update will not connect to servers.def.vpx at a number of different ip addresses (170.120.xxx.xxx:80)
windows 7, x64, sp1

:frowning:

Set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)

Several others posted about a problem updating yesterday/today (depending on where you live).

Please try an Avast Repair:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

Let us know if this fixes your problem. Thank you.

there is no repair option available. so i chose update. still get hung up trying do dl servers.def.vpx.

0x000004C7 seems to be “The operation was canceled by the user”.
You can search forums for more.

Where “user” might be the user or some nasty malware.
As always, I’ld recommend a MalwareBytes AntiMalware Scan.
Make sure to update MBAM from within the MBAM GUI before scanning.

dunno ??? update started working again on its own. only changes i made to system is to not keep yahoo messenger and 1-click answers loaded but i don’t think there is a conflict there because i’ve run both of them for years without a problem.

Do the MBAM scan. Quick scan is enough. Just to be sure.
Download MBAM, update via GUI before scanning.

thanks. i did the scan and got 1 curious item but do not think it is related.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\Notepad.exe (Security.Hijack) → Quarantined and deleted successfully.

i never use notepad anyway, i use something called textpad.exe.

Remove avast!..

Run ccleaner…

Clean your computer… Clean your registry…

Install AVAST!..

Lets see that works…

i should do that again even though all is well now ??? i may just reinstall windows, just to be sure ;D

Just disregard the last post. ;D
If it’s working now and your MBAM scan shows no further stuff, you’re fine. Have a nice day!
