I’m using Avast free, ver. 6 on my Windows 7 pc and want to use it on an old laptop running W98. Can’t find any thread here since 2007 re: 98 and don’t know if ver 6 will run ok. Also the laptop is offline. How can I download a definitions file, or does the appl install have definitions?
When I change the laptop to some version of Linux, such as Ubuntu or something, will ver 6 run ok on that?
Thanx,
Mac

Avast 6 does not work with win98, you need at least win2000 SP4
Ubuntu dont know ? check here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=5.0
As an alternative you could use Clamwin on your win98, they’ve just released a new version today http://www.clamwin.com/

For Win98 you “could” try Avast 4.8, which is still receiving automatic database updates, but I don’t know when the support for it will be stopped.
Guessing your hardware based on a Win 98 install, you could try Ubuntu, but, a lighter version of Linux designed for older computers, might be a better choice. Take a look at Xubuntu, and go from there (search for other alternatives).

Though avast! for Windows won’t work on Linux, they offer an on-demand version for Linux. See details here:

Support for avast 4.x will end on 31.12.2012.
