avast free version causes crash

I have a new HP laptop with win 7 Home Premium and AMD E-300 processor. I tried twice to install and use Avast free version. Each time it caused the system to crash. I had to boot in safe mode and uninstall Avast.

did you uninstall the Norton trail version that usually comes with HP before installing avast ?

and use norton removal tool to remove any leftover files that may conflict?

I did not uninstall Norton trail version. I will try that.
