Avast (Free Version) will not successfully scan USB flash drives

First, my specs:

XP SP3 (Fully updated)
Avast (Program: 5.0.462/Virus: 100317-1) (Has been checked for updates within the last hour of this post)

Now for the problem. When I try to scan my USB flash drives using the “Removable Media” scan, it runs for about a second then reports ‘some files could not be scanned’ and in the results it states *BOOTD: - Error: The parameter is incorrect (87)

I’ve tried multiple flash drives in multiple ports and every single one fails. I did see the workaround (Making a custom scan and going to Browse… and picking the individual drives). It’s tedious, and even when you go that route, yes it will scan without throwing up that error but it says it scans 7 GIGS in less than two seconds when it took it 37 minutes to scan 15 GB of my HDD. So something is not working properly.

I have researched this before posting and found people have had the exact same issues as far back as fall of last year. One would think this would have been resolved by now.

And please, no quips about “Don’t complain about free software”. If it doesn’t work, then why should I use it?

Can’t help with the Free edition, but seems to work ok with an identical version of Avast Pro here…

Just scanned one of my USB drives using the Removable Drive scan option with the following result…

Run time: 0:00:58
Tested Files: 7520
Tested Folders: 72
Amount of data tested: 1.06 GB
Infected files: 1

The infection I know about… it’s just an Eicar test file

Using Avast Pro v5.0.462
Current Version: 100317-1

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate

Cheers…

well, are they Zipped files or rar files? i have had that issue too.
