Avast Free, very high CPU usage 50%

I have been using Avast since many many years with Windows 7 home premium
After de latest program update Avast started to create a very high CPU usage 50 %, which I never experienced before.

I uninstalled Avast, subesquently the PC would not boot anymore
I reinstalled Windows 7 and reinstalled avast free again very high cpu usage.

Please advise as you understand I am hesitante to uninstalle Avast again.

but I did a clean reinstall of windows 7 now

That’s the VPS build not the version.

I found the cause, in Tools the cleanup tool causes the CPU usage, I switched it to off and the usage is back to 0
