Avast free warns for possible Rootkit, but does not remove or log.

Dear Avast,
Avast free warns for possible Rootkit, but does not remove or log. An avast scan upon reboot seems to breakoff quickly without producing output, also with a freshly installed Avast pro.
Hitman pro finds tracking cookies on first scan (HitmanPro_20121103_1703) and suspicious python scripts on second try. I have them removed but they reappear (HitmanPro_20121104_1843).
Avast aswMBR highlights (logfile: aswMBR):
\Driver\atapi[0xfffffa80053d66b0] → IRP_MJ_INTERNAL_DEVICE_CONTROL → prl_strg.sys[0xfffff880018b8768]

I followed your instructions on: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

AdwCleaner removes browser/toolbar crap you first click search.....then a log should popup...close it and click delete button the log is not that important, the removal expert will see any leftover in OTL log

TDSSKiller seems happy about ATAPI, so lets approach it from a different direction… How is the computer at the moment ?

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

After the ComboFix scan, I can’t really tell how my computer is running, every program I try to run results in a pop-up: “Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion”
I have tried to stay offline with it because I fear it might get other infections. Regarding performance I think I recently noticed a slower start-up under OSX, could there be a connection?
Please find the ComboFix log attached.

Thanks for your expert advice.

3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.
Could you reboot please and let me know of any outstanding problems

Following the instructions is like a close reading course :-[
Everything seems to be running smoothly now. I turned on my antivirus, firewall etc.
I think you cured my system! Thank you very much.

Best regards, Thorsten

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the “x” and “/”)
then click OK

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

I’m sorry I have to report the return of the Python scripts… Please find attached.
:frowning:

I ran ComboFix again. Last time I used a USB stick to download ComboFix from a clean OSX, this this I tried usign the web directly. Of this run I attach the log.
The python scripts return within minutes after restarting…
How to use the firewall after restarting? You need to de-activate it for ComboFix to run correctly, don’t you?
Maybe I should try disconnetcing my wifi?

:-\

Right after posting on your forum, through my sickly OS, the computer shows me DOS-like blue screen. With a message along the lines of:
Your computer is experiencing problems and will have to restart… followed by some technical error codes.
Honestly, I am starting to think I’d be better of re-installing the Bootcamp disk, also because I have few programs on the partition. The only thing worrying me: Is it possible that “Parallels tools” or “Bootcamp assistant” could contain the infection? Like out of reach of the scan but capable of re-infecting the disk every time…?
Please advice me.

Does the bootcamp use Python to set it up ? Python is a programming language and as such can be used for good or bad… Can you remember what file(s) the blue scren referenced ?
