Avast free will not install on Win 8 64 bit preview

Hello,

Just tried to install Avast free on my trial version of Win 8.1 Preview. It will not install. Using the troubleshooter it says an update is available but the link only takes me back to the place I got the program from in the firsts place.

I realize Win 8.1 is officially "out’ yet but it would be nice to have something better than Windows Defender! LOL

Thanks

J T

This is being worked on in the current beta testing, if you are up for it then here is the information.

Whilst this beta appears to be stable and some are using it on win8.1 preview version, I advise caution and doing a system image, etc. just in case.

Hi DavidR,

Thanks for the link I will try it!

No worries I have Win 8 on it’s own partition and will use Acronis to make an image of it.

Cheers,

You’re welcome.

Hi DavidR,

Sorry to report no joy on the beta version of Avast. It appeared to install OK but I have no icon in the tooltray to show me it’s there and running. I get a message saying the “side by side configuration is incorrect”. If I use the Action Center it does show Avast as being “enabled.”

I saw another post suggesting to d/l vcredist_x64.exe to solve the “side by side” message. Did that but I still have that message when I click the shortcut to run Avast.

Many thanks in advance,

Not sure which C++ version you downloaded but as far as I’m aware you need to install MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

You need 2008 SP1 - this is the one:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update and obviously the 64bit version of that.

DavidR,

Here is the file I got from MS http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11895 I got the last one on the list, the 5MB one that is 64 bit. Avast still not working as far as I can see.

Thanks,

J T

Try the x86 version. I had a problem with one of my games after the latest Windows updates I installed last night. I tried the x64 one and no go. Then installed the x86 version and everything is ok. I’m using Windows 7 64bit but it might help in Win 8 also.

Hiya RAM1220,

Took your advice and it worked! I did get a message saying " This program has a problem" and I chose to run it without help from MS and it’s OK now.

That message appears EACH time Win 8.1 is rebooted. Yes I can make it so I don’t see the message but it’s there visible or not

So I’m good to go until the 8.1 Win 64 preview goes belly up!

Thanks!

Cheers,
