Avast Free won't install. Windows XP SP3.

Hello everyone,

I had to reinstall windows xp on one of my old computers. When I went to install avast I received a windows error saying something along the lines of “avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe has encountered a problem”.
I’m wondering if avast support for XP has stopped? I also remember the previous version of Avast I had (before reinstall of OS) didn’t seem to be updating anymore.

Hardware information.
OS : Windows XP SP3
CPU : AMD Athlon™XP 1600+ 1.4 GHz
RAM : 1 GB
GPU : Geforce FX 5500

Any help is greatly appreciated.

avast only works on XP if the cpu supports the SSE2 instruction set and yours doesn’t.
Last version that will work is 2015.x

The same goes for other av’s.
They need the SSE2 instruction set to work.

Thanks for the info. I’ll see if I have any other older CPUs lying around that support SSE2.
If I can’t find any then I guess it’s either Bitdefender Free (which I’m not a fan of) or never go online with that computer again. ;D
