Hi,
I’m very new to this sort of thing, but I know ym computer is infected with some sort of unpleasant program because it keeps giving me errors, closing and/or freezing internet explorer and generally just slowing down the computer, causing LOTS of freezes and being a nuicance.
I just downloaded Avast!, but when I use it to do a DEEP scan it gets stuck after about 2% and won’t move on to scan a new file.
Any advise on how to have Avast push beyond this and scan my whole computer (hopefully locking away bad programs and fixing my computer) would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Please help!
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What is your firewall ?
As strange as it seems, zone alarm can have this effect.
My computer came with McAffee but I uninstalled that normally and downloaded AVG. But AVG never reported any virus’ or any problems, even though my computer would sometimes act strangely. So I uninstalled that normally and installed Avast. I think the only firewall I have is Windows defender, but i think it’s switched off at the moment. the only other thing I would think to say is that I have Spyware doctor as well.
Remnants of previous AVs are a real issue at times.
You don’t say which McAfee product you had so here are some links - McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe Or http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html
2007 version - http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

For possible AVG remnants - AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.
As far as I’m aware Windows Defender is not a firewall.
Run the above removal tools and see if that resolves it, if not try pausing Spyware Doctor during the scan and see if that helps.
Can you tell me a little about your system, OS, CPU, RAM and HDD size and Data on it ?
When it does freeze, what folder is displayed, is it the same one and are there any very large files in it (live video files) ?
