Avast freezes when scanning during screensaver

I have Avast 4.8.1201 running on a PC with XP SP2. When idle I have it set up to scan when the Avast screensaver is active. But each time after the scan has been running for some time, my PC freezes.

There are no errors in my Windows event logs indicating what is causing the problem. When I check the Avast log, I didn’t see anything specifically flagged as an error (though some of the log files contain a lot of detail, so I could easily be missing it). The log folder also contains a number of unp*.tmp.mdmp files such as e.g. unp31464003, unp33586112, unp35024273 and so on.

Because of the problem I have deactivated the screensaver scanning, and so far my PC has not frozen (but then again it hasn’t gone into screensaver mode). Other PC’s in my home, also running Avast, do not have this problem.

For info: previously I had Norton 360 installed but removed this using the Norton Removal Tool before installing Avast. I use Comodo Firewall and Windows firewall is not active.

Can anybody suggest how I might resolve this issue?

Maybe you could send the unpXXXX and other files by email to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

I’ve sent email to vlk. Since the next release is not far away, I’ll probably wait until then rather than d/l the pre-release version at this stage.
