avast freezing

first of all can i just say that avast is the best av program i have used so far. it seems to catch everythign and cleaned up my computer to a certain extent. it scans as far the the 6547th file and thne freezes. it was an old medical diagnosis program so i just uninstalled it, and i scanned again and it got to the 6547th file and then stopped. everything freezes up for two or three minutes and then slowly comes back to life but the scan doesn’t move. when i stop the scan and get out of avast it takes a while for everything to get back up to running speed. i have no idea what is going on. i have been having horrific problems wiht my computer over the past few weeks but the other day i turned it on and it worked perfectly. except that one wee thing. anyone have any ideas?

???

When a scan freezes, try to check the report options to include ‘OK’ files and all others.
So, all your first 6547 files will be there. See the last one and try to post the name, where it is (path)… maybe we can guess what’s happening.

Well, I wouldn’t rely on the exact number - the progress is updated and displayed once in a while (let’s say a second), so if the window shows 6547, it may be actually a few (tens of) files ahead.
Also, some folders (e.g. TEMP, Browser cache) may get some new files in between.

Is it possible that the scanner came accross a big archive file that it was trying to extract? (did you check the scanning of archive files?)
