i’ve just done a scan using avast when i got my results at the end of the scan i tried deleting the files but i got a box saying its processing the results then nothing happened after a while i clicked cancel and nothing happened i couldn’t even close the program. am i just being to impatient in letting the results process, if so how long does it take to process. i don’t know if these results were viruses because i never got a message saying it was. next to the results was a message saying unable to scan
thanx
What version of avat are you using Home or Pro ?
Firstly deletion isn’t really a good first option (you have none left), ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
The list may simply have been files that couldn’t be scanned for what ever reason given in the results list. Is this what it was ?
If you selected one or more of these files and choose to delete them, it follows if avast couldn’t scan them it may for the same reason not be able to delete them. This may well have cause the program to hang or be very slow as it tried to do as you asked for each file you selected.
Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
Does it happen always approximatelly at the same place/folder of the scan?
Do you see a hard disk activity (when it freezes)? Is only the program frozen, or the whole computer (possibly with mouse cursor)?
Additionally, you can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).
After avast! disappears, check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem.
The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt
i’ve got avast 4.7 home it scans all the way through then gives me the results at the end. the results were -
local settings\temp\tempory\internet files\content.IE5\29MLK09N
local settings\temp\tempory\internet files\content.IE5\KDEBWXU3
local settings\temp\tempory\internet files\content.IE5\P30LHKUN
next to all 3 results i get a message saying “unable to scan:internal program error” i tried moving all 3 to the chest but i get this message " error accured during moving file to chest. the process cannot access the file because its being used by another process". and as i said i can’t delete them, i’m not sure if these are viruses or tojans. any help would be much apreciated
thanx
Why don’t you try cleaning your temporary files. You can use CleanUp or the Windows Advanced Care features for that. Or the well-known, CCleaner.
After that, you can schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).
Those three temporary internet folders are likely to be very large. Not to mention you shouldn’t have tried to send them to the chest (and certainly not tried to delete them outside of Internet Explorer), as it is just an ‘unable to scan’ rather than a positive detection of malware.
It is likely that if you have IE open (or running in the background) at the time those folders will effectively be in use and locked.
i cleaned my tempory files using ccleaner, i’ve just scanned my computer and everything worked fine
thanx
Glad to know.
