avast full scan

I did a full scan today, total scanned files was like 50GB but my C Drive only had 27GB of data, where does the extra come from??? It just doesn’t add up.

also does reformatting the drives get rid of everything? Like infections and stuff

unpacking and scanning zipped files? have you changed default scan settings?

yes....do you have any? if so we have removal experts here that will do it for free...no need for a reinstall

Yes I changed the settings to scan ALL files, everything. So I assume it will unpack everything and scan it? Which is why it scanned 50GB although my drive only have like 27GB? Are the files in my C drive compressed? Assuming I only have 1 drive

Are the files in my C drive compressed?
how can we know that?

unless you are some super geek and know what you are doing, stay with default scan settings for a problem free avast
avast guys have worked with malware 24/7 for more then 20 years so there is a reason why the settings are as they are

Another thing that makes a difference is how deep of rootkit scan.
Full rootkit scan will scan more HDD than a quick rootkit scan and
a very quick rootkit scan.

It may not be completely compressed as by default it isn’t unless you compressed it. But even so there will be many archive files on the drive, each of those will be unpacked. Archive files are inert until unpacked and executed, at which point they would be scanned by the on-access scanner (file system shield); so there is little point in scanning archives.

three possible things:

  • virtual memory file/paging file
  • hibernation file
  • system restore points/volume shadow copies

If it’s not at least one of those three, take a look with tree-size or any other disk-measuring program.
