Avast FW - Private/Public

I dont have home network.

I always use “Public” profile with any firewall as its little tighter security than “Private” And also as no home network here.
I have used “Public” profile with Windows FW, Kaspersky FW, Eset FW, Comodo FW, etc… with no probs.

But with Avast IS, if I select “Private” then no probs BUT if I select “Public” then programs updates, login, etc works but browsing doesn’t works i.e I get check internet connection, took too long, etc…

Any info?

Yes you do have a home network.
Modem > router > PC is considered a network and that is a private network.

Public is meant for connections to “public” (WiFi) networks.

I dont have a modem. I have a router & use it occasionally.

Mostly I use direct connection i.e
I have a PPPOE connection i.e internet wire RJ45 goes directly into the laptop.

And I also use Mobile connection i.e as Hotspot.

No probs with any FW “Public” profile with the above mentioned connection And with router too.

Why Avast IS “Public” profile blocks connections?

Yes you do have a modem.
Without it you can’t even connect to the Internet.

What you think is a router is in fact a multi-device.
Modem, router and likely also firewall in one device.

Ofcourse there are things blocked when you set the firewall to “Public” as a public access point has more risks.

Then my ISP modem is on the terrace of my building I guess.
Coz in my apartment, internet wire enters through windows & has RJ45 connector that goes directly into the laptop.

This applies to “Public” profile of Avast FW only or other vendors FW too?
