About the time i installed Avast, my DirectX based software stopped working propperly apparently at random. My Full Screen Video wouldn’t work, games wouldn’t go FullScreen, dxdiag test failed, Video Overlay Controls didn’t work, and so on.
So i’ll just cut it short and say that after about some time of headbashing i traced this to DirectX and found out that ashDISP.exe locks up ddraw.dll and so all this DirectX based stuff doesn’t work.
When i kill ashDISP.exe, ddraw.dll is unlocked and all starts working again. I can’t be for certain that something else in my system helps this problem appear , but i thought you might want to know since ashDISP.exe apparently uses DirectDraw and DirectDraw surfaces should be freed and unlocked propperly after using them :D.
For now, i have a pascal program for restarting ashDISP.exe
BTW, sorry if all this sounds unclear, English is not my mother languge and it’s about 40°C right now.
That’s rather strange, avast! doesn’t have much to do with DirectX…
What operating system do you use, and what version of DirectX do you have?
Also, open avast! program settings and on the Troubleshooting page, check the option “Check for full-screen applications before displaying popups”. Is it enabled or disabled?
where are you from lhaymehr?? 40 degrees?? coooool!! We’re struggling here in Mar del Plata (Argentina) with barely 0º C and with a termal sensation of -8º c today at morning, add we’re right at sea shore an it’s lot windy out there - arghh, I hate COLD!!!
I don’t even want to know shore water temperature… brrrrrr!
mat77 if that was supposed to be sarcastic, you failed to impress ;D
As for the problem at hand, yes it was strange to me also, that this kind of software uses a DirectX component. Maybe a program i’m using to see a list of open files by a certain process is wrong, but the fact is, that when i closed ashDISP.exe, ddraw.dll got released by that image, and everything worked.
Handle mixup? Don’t know, i just informed here in good intentions.
← big loudly LOL xD xD xD what sarcastic? right now is about 3:30 pm and is only 6ºC or real temperature… and yes, I really LUV hot weather, it’s one of the best cool things on the earth to wear a short, sandals, sunglasses 8) and if you want -optative- an open shirt
About your issue, sorry but I don’t have any idea what it could be , you may try luke asking Tech or sending a direct email to avast, but I don’t know, sorry
lol sorry i thought you were “pulling my leg” ;D. I was convinced that Argentina doesn’t go below 40°C this time of year. That shows my grades from geography :-[
My problem hasn’t appeared since then (knock on wood*3). Maybe it’s one of those strange elusive Microsoft problems :).
Sorry for the bump, but i’m having this exact same issue (reason i stopped using Avast, but i want it back), so any news of a fix, or will i just have to keep killing a .exe every so often?
Yeah, seems i made a fool of myself, i checked again and the old version i had was 4.7 (i was checking the wrong number >.<)
And the issue still hasn’t showed up for me, only configuration option that is different that i can think of, is that i set it not to show the update alert windows (they are drawn alpha blended)
Well it hasn’t reappeared so far, so i think it’s ok (last time it was a daily event, i could log out and back in to fix it, and it might happen again an hour later)
So, if it happens again, just let us know. Better in this case would be some Alwil team help as we, the users, are more or less making shots in the dark here…
