Avast hanging thunderbird?

Within the past week, I have been getting short term hangs when running Thunderbird. When Thunderbird is running and receiving email or inspecting it for the first time in the message pane, applications stop responding for about 15 seconds. The cursor actually freezes in the middle of this process for about three seconds. Task manager will not update throughout the entire hang, so I am unable to find out which process is causing the issue.

I suspect either zonealarm or avast.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

  1. I have Avast.
  2. I have Thunderbird.
  3. I don’t have Zonealarm.
  4. I don’t have problems with Thunderbird.
  5. Could you make your own conclusion?

Hi,

If you stop scanning your emails they should download really quickly.

I do not scan my emails on download as they are scanned on access.

I have read that scanning on download is more likely to currupt data and
I used to have to run ScanDisk daily to correct lots of email storage errors.

However, I do use mail washer - but that is not an answer for everyone.

My regards

Hi jpr2015, welcome to the forum.
I also have Avast and Thunderbird, but without ZoneAlarm, and no problems.

So it could be any number of issues, including but not limited to ZoneAlasrm.
Did you have/do you have any othe AV or security software on this computer (now or earlier).
If you used another AV in the past, how was it removed?
What OS?
