avast ‘hangs’ when 20% into a complete scan. Can’t use mouse or keyboard. machune effectively dead. Have waited 30 mins plus and no movement. Ideas?
Which avast…?
Which version…?
OS…?
Other security related software…?
I’d suggest to run some hardware checks (memory check and a disk check with a surface scan).
Avast free version. Latest version. W7 Home Premium, 32 bit.
It would help all that wish to help if you were a bit more forthcomming in supplying details about your system ( latest version ) is not very discriptive :
What other security software is on your system ( antispyware, firewall ) and what av were you using before installing avast ? you should also try what igor suggested.

Sorry for lack of detail. I am new to this business.
Avast prog ver 6.0.1203, deffinitions ver 110710-0.
I have had avast running on this computer since new last October with auto-update, with no problems. I have no other antivirus or anti-spyware and no firewall except the microsoft one built in.
Windows 7 Home premium, 32 bit. What other info would be helpful?
Did you try what igor suggested in reply 2, other than that i would try a repair and if that doesn’t work do a clean install of avast.

Any suggestions for a memory check program, nice and simple so that even I can use it?
I do not appear to have such a programme on my PC
The quickest and easiest way in windows 7 is to use the built-in memory diagnostic.
1.Click Start or press the Windows key
2.Type mdsched.exe
3.Chose one of the available options.
If you choose the second option, the scan will start the next time you boot the computer. If you choose the first option, the computer will reboot and start the scan immediately
Or right after BIOS before windows starts, push F8, Select Memory Test from the options and run the long test, it’ll take a long time.
To do a disc check right click on c drive and choose properties then click tools and check now.
Actually, if you ran repeated tests and it always froze at 20% (i.e. the behavior is not random, but always occurs at the same place)… it won’t be the memory. Try just the disk test in that case… if you cannot move even the mouse cursor when the machine is frozen, it looks like a hardware problem to me.
