Avast hangs when scanning MS Streets & Trips

I installed Avast about a week ago, since then I have not been able to complete a full scan of my computer. I have tried running it at night, I have tried a thorough scan as well as a standard scan and it always hangs when it gets to MS Street & Trips\Data. It just sits there and won’t go any further.

Anyone else getting this?

I have Win XP pro
Avast v. 4.5.546
256mb ram
PIII
and 1/2 of my 30gb hard drive is still empty.

Let me know what other statistics you need from me.

What is the exact location of the file?

Can you scan it manualy (right click the file and select scan)

Reinstall Streets & Trips. It solved it for someone else.

The location of the file is c:|Program Files\Microsoft Streets & Trips\Data and no, it hangs when I scan that folder manually, too.

Hm, you’re not the only one with this problem (unless it’s you who I was e-mailing with :))

Could you please try to locate the problematic file (i mean the real file, inside the “Data” folder)? For example, turn on the creation of the (text) report file, including the “OK files”, and scan the Streets & Trips Data folder. The “bad” file should be at the end of the report (or maybe “after” the end of the report - but you should be able to guess the real one).

Btw, does it make any difference if you turn off the archive scanning?
Thanks!

Ok, I’ve done that but when the program hangs does it create a log when I stop it? I mean if I just let it go it’ll hang forever so if I stop the scan where it is hanging at, will it create a log? And where do I view it at?

The report is created during the scanning - as soon as a single file is scanned, it’s written to the report file. So, if not the last one (the one that caused the lockup), the one before should be there.

The location of the report file is shown on the Settings page where you turned it on; by default, it’s
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\avast4\Data\Report\simple user interface.txt
(I think).

And where do I go to view the log? I’m in log viewer now and do not see a scan log.

BTW, thank you for the fast replies and help! ;D

And no I’m not the one you’ve been emailing with, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one having this trouble.

No, the Log Viewer is for something else.
The report file is a simple text file - you can open it e.g. in Notepad.

This is where my settings say the report should be but there isn’t a report there that lists the individual files only a general recap of the scan.

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report

Did you check the “OK files” to be included in the report? (in the options page)

No I didn’t, but I have since and I ran the scan again and here is my new log…

So the file immediately after msmbase.htm is the culprit? Here is a list of the files in the data folder up to the last one that is listed as ok and including the file immediately after that one…

Cons80.dat
ConstructionsA0020806.dat
MSD8.htm
MSMBase.htm
USA_ATT.psi

Is that enough info or should I list them all?

On WinNT platform, the files are usually returned (= scanned) in alphabetical order; so if there aren’t any more files in between (than the ones you listed), I’d suspect the file USA_ATT.psi.
Can you try to copy the file to some other (empty) folder and scan it? This way you’ll see if it’s really the cause. And if it’s not, try some more file “around”, please.

How big is the USA_ATT.psi file?

It’s only 5kb. I will try moving it.

Nope still did it. Ugh! This is frustrating.

I’m inclined to just go back to using AVG, it worked fine and didn’t bog down my system so much and I didn’t have this problem. I only switched because they don’t have IM scanning integrated. I like Avast but not if I have to look for each tiny file it’s going to hang on.

Sorry, I’m just really frustrated here.

Well, this certainly isn’t a normal situation; I’d say it hasn’t happend before - sorry for the troubles :-\

Anyway, what does it mean “still did it”? I meant to scan the new folder with this single file inside… to see if it’s the one.
OK, how many files are there in the Data folder? Would it be possible to copy them to another folder one by one and scan it each time?
Or, does the lockup happens even of you select “Scan Data” from the context menu of the folder? If yes, it’s certainly a faster method for scanning the particular files…

Ok, here’s what I’ve done.

I don’t use MS streets and Trips anyway so I just uninstalled it. I will re-scan again and see if the scan completes now that the offending program is gone.

I really do want to thank you for your help, and hopefully I have not offended you or anyone else by becoming frustrated. . Hopefully this will take care of the problem and I will not need to ask for more help. But if my re-scan doesn’t run smoothly, to quote Ahrnold “I’ll be back”.

What version of MS Streets and Trips was it? We’d really like to fix the problem… maybe we could get the file somewhere.

It was old I got it with my WinME computer and transferred it when I got my new WinXP system. But as I said I didn’t use it much anyway. Who needs that when you’ve got mapquest and those other free map sites? Sorry, didn’t think to look at the version before I uninstalled it.
