After abotu 72 hours of being on, Avast jsut stops allowing any internet connections. Updated and reinstalled…no dice. Even did the remover.
You don’t say what avast program you are using (Free/Pro/AIS, etc.) or what version the latest being 19.6.2383 (build: 19.6.4546.508) ?
Have you checked the task manager to see if there is a process taking up a lot of CPU ?
Sounds a bit like you could be running out of resources.
When it stops allowing internet connections, are you getting any error messages, etc. ?
My apologies. I’m using Avast internet security paid version. Laptop has 2 quad core 3.2 ghz processors, 64GB ram, 512Sata SSD and 2TB platter SSD. Nothing in the task manager is obtrusive or obnoxious. Firefox tends to suck up memory especially when I have a ton of tabs open, BUT, even though I leave the laptop on, I usually kill Firefox when I am done for the day. That being said there doesn’t seem to be any difference in Avast locking internet traffic whether I have left FF open or not -it seems to happen ever 3-4 days.
Also, I can’t look up what version I am using, because after this happens, Avast won’t open the GUI. It’s still running, and I have to reboot to see the gui again.
After a reboot
BTW - the solution is to right mouse click on Icon, disable A/V for 10 minutes, and let it come back…but after I do that, i can no longer access the GUI
I’m at a bit of a loss (being an Avast Free user), but I was thinking that this would have been a resource issue, given it is an issue that happens after three days or so.
I will try to draw some attention to this topic.
- OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
- Other security related software installed…?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
Have you tried a Clean Install of Avast:

If you need additional help with the Clean Install, watch this:

Yes I have already done a clean removal and install. But, by that same token - I have had to do taht 3 times already with this software - and frankly, I’m not too impressed if that’s the solution everytime…
Do you restart your system daily? Shut it off daily or, simply put the system to sleep?
to find out the version, right click the system tray icon and select ‘about Avast’
I don’t restart my system daily- for one I didn’t have to until this latest version came out, and I also often have my computer doing final renderings of graphics in the overnight hours. When this hangs, the tray icon becomes unresponsive - left or right mouse click does nothing. I have VPN software installed on it - and I checked to see if maybe logging in and out of the VPN’s causes it to happen, but I only use the VPN on that machine sparingly (I have another PC for the heavy VPN loaded work). But I ran all the VPN’s last night for about a half hour each, the logged out and it’s still working fine. I rebooted yesterday -the only thing that seems to be consistent is the timing - about every 72-96 hours it happens.
I did find this error notation in the windows event viewer…(see attached). Looking at when I originally posted my thread here, the timing of this event is certainly suspect. The machine had already been “hung” by avast prior to this event I am pretty sure.
