Avast has a password that limits my use of the software

I just recently downloaded avast anti virus, the free trial to see how it works and if i like it. So far it is good, but i downloaded it and I’m running windows 7, and whenever i go to edit details it asks me for a password, and i don’t remember setting a password, what do I do?

Hi and welcome,

you just got to register it on the avast site, they send you a mail with a license number, you enter the license, and you’re done.

what’s that with the details you want to edit, what details ??? there’s only one place related to password in avast 4 home, it’s in the menu when you right click the tray icon: you enter any password you want there to protect avast settings.

I was just checking the new software, and i already registered it and everything, its really not that big of a deal, but i was just wondering if there was like a foactory imputed password or soething, but if theres a password on it its still fine because i can still use all the normal functions and what not.

no there’s no such thing as a hard coded password on it, I’m really wondering what you’re talking about. Could you send a screen shot about that?

ps: or are you talking about what unlocks it to become a pro version ??? ;D or you may be attempting to access a pro-only feature… haven’t used avast 4 for a while (I’m running the beta of V5), and I guess the unlocking from free to pro goes through another license number…

I was trying to add the image using the short cut provided, but it wont show in the preview, it is probably because the img needs to be online, could i send it to you via email or something else like that?

You can add an image when posting using the ‘Additional Options’

It wont appear when you press preview.

The following might help:

Ok thanks, this is my first time posting here, this is what happens when i press any button except for the run scans, and the scan options.

This password to protect the avast settings isn’t set by default, so either someone with access to the system has set one, or perhaps at some point this option Set/Change Password… might have been clicked, see image.

Backing out of it might have caused it to have a null or space in the value, if you click OK without entering anything that might resolve it. However, if a password has been set and you don’t know it, effectively your only option is to reinstall avast.

It may be best to do a clean install:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe. I assume it is the Home version, if not get the latest Pro trial version.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Alright thank you, that helps a lot, and i bet it was my little brother he’s always trying to lock my out of my own system by putting passwords on everything.

Once you’ve re-installed it, password protect it yourself.
You might want to consider password protecting the computer, too. Give him a limited user account.

lol yeah someone has set a password behind your back ;D

You’re welcome.

Time to but a crimp in his activity then as has been suggested ;D
