Could it be a problem with cooling (i.e. overheating of the computer)?

My computer is a Compaq Presario 2133EA. I will try to scan the full disk this winter and tell you ;D. Thanks.
Rémy.

Talking serious, could it be a overheating trouble? I mean, does the computer shutdown or just ‘freeze’?
Is the cooling system working?

The computer doesn’t shutdown, just freeze.
I scanned the full C: disk once. I couldn’t since.
Do you think I must re-install avast ? Can I use the same key twice ?
Thanks for your help.
Rémy.

Seems software and not hardware (overheating).

You can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).

After booting (or coming out from freezing), check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem.

The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt

Rémy, it won’t hurt. You can try. You can you the same key in the same computer as many times you want (until 14 month expiration period)

I try this. I create a report file. I scanned the full C: disk twice. The computer freeze twice, but not on the same file.
Rémy.

Please, post the full name and path of the two files…

Hello,
You can see the 2 rapports here :

Thanks for your help.

Rémy, the reports seems ok… the last files are under Windows folder but nothing strange or anything that might freez the scanning… ::slight_smile: ???
I need help from Alwil team here…

The scan progress is completely different in these two scans… it’s quite unlikely to be an avast! problem, I’d say.
How exactly does the computer freeze - can you move the mouse pointer, or even the mouse is frozen?

Hello.
Even the mouse is frozen.
Thanks.
Rémy.

In that case, I really think it’s a hardware problem - probably overheating of some components (could be CPU, RAM memory, graphics adapter… but CPU is the most likely here, I’d say).
The additional disk/CPU activity during a scan might increase the temperature of the computer (compared to “normal” work), which may make the problem more likely to occur.

Thank you very much for your help.
Rémy.

Hi Remy…

I would have to concur with igor on this one. I have heard of Compaqs having this problem (overheating) in the past. However, for a laptop, it’s not simply a matter of going out and buying a new/better CPU fan.

They do make cooling devices for laptops that serve in addition to the fan your laptop already came with. Here is one example…

Hope this helps.
