Avast home 4.7 no longer usable on my old PC running Win98SE

Here you go. Just blow the dust of them first. ;D

Good luck.

CORRECTION!

Just “discovered” I actually have all 6 Avast! Home providers installed & running without any problems on a 98SE machine.

Vladimyr
how can I disactivate permanently one or more providers ?
Hans

Not Vladimyr, but left click the “a” icon, select the provider you want to terminate, click the terminate button, answer yes to persist the change.

Hi Hans,
I found that persisting termination was not enough with 95OSR2, but it may be fine with 98SE. What I did was a “Change” re-install from “Add or Remove Programs” to leave only the wanted providers. Or you could uninstall and custom re-install.

McAfee
I downloaded the “Complete Manual Removal of VirusScan 4.0.x” proposed by om,
and followed precisely all instructions.
Result : no remaining McAfee entry was found!
Hans

All right, that rules that out,

BTW, I am now using 4.7.1043 with 6/7 providers running.

then I checked the RAM memory and did scandisk including surface test.
The present boot was OK, just see what happens tomorrow.
Hans

“tomorrow”
is today,
again troubles at boot of pc,
see screenshot of taskbar (attached) with 3 a-icons and 3 i-icons,
I called ‘ashServ.exe’ 2 times using the shortcut on desktop.
however avast is working

are there too many tasks at startup ?
please see list of startup tasks (attached).
which tasks could be deleted and executed by hand after startup ?

thanks for suggestions
Hans

Every little bit counts ;D

EPSON Status Monitor 3 Environment Check

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?letter=E&filter=&count=50&offset=100

Samsung LBP SM, “C:\WINDOWS\Samsung\LaserSMMgr\ssmmgr.exe” /autorun, HKEY_LM\Run

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?letter=S&filter=&count=50&offset=1400

Those two are for printer montoring, ie checking ink levels. They can be unchecked. They should be available when starting to print. I’ve got an Epson and the monitor does show when I’m printing.

I couldn’t find these two, maybe someone else knows if that are needed.

TkBellExe, “C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe” -osboot, HKEY_LM\Run

The two links abve are from the link I posted back on page one. How much free resouces do you have?

hello
to-day first boot OK

  • ressources : 160 MB Ram, 86% free
    Hans

Fingers crossed
http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/images/smilies/AngelPray.gif

further tests to-day

the (now old) startup list of RegCleaner 4.3 is in annex, see RegCleanerStartupList.txt

from this I cleaned 5 items, see CleanedStartupItems.txt

the remaining items are in RemainingStartUpList.txt

with this reduced configuration I bootet the pc for three times :
no problems !!!

I then run RealPlayer v.10.5 and looked at a video from the Web.
after that I checked again the start up list of RegCleaner 4.3.
there are just those items as in RemainingStartUpList.txt
TKBellExe did not appear again (as was reported some years ago).

the resources are still 86 % free

what are consequences when continuing like this ?
the next days will show the avast behaviour during boot.
I now shall do a jAVSupdate, see what happens then.

ScanRegistry

“Scans the system registry and makes back-ups at start-up. Important should the registry become corrupt. The executable “Scanregw.exe” is located in %windir% (where %windir% is the Windows directory - C:\Windows or C:\Winnt)”

The registry won’t be backed up. So only important if you have to replace a corrupt registry. ;D

SystemTray

As far as I know, just supplies a few icons.

sorry,
that problem still exists, more or less frequent.
I have been spending many hours in looking for a solution.

  • had a trial using that startup delaying programm, this however blocked win98SE.
  • then ugraded Avast to vers. 4.7.1074 and updated jAVS, but problems persists.

I got the impression that Win98SE and Avast are overwriting each other
during startup of the pc, thus killing each other. Just sometimes both
succeed in starting without getting in conflict.
How can I manage to bring all this to the attention of the
Avast programmers ?

Hi, …

Try StartupControlPanel = http://www.mlin.net

StartupControlPanel, will manage all “Startup Programs”, from an old Windows 95 and up, it even work in my Vista 64 bit Ultimate. To use it = to not start a software, deactivate checkbox in the same line, and also try to move some start section like startup user section to a local startup machine section, to see if you have multiple start of a software, …

At my side, … I will try with VMWare, Windows 98 SE French, with the last Avast Version 4.7.1074 Home, … and Professional evaluation, …

By the way, … have you the Avast Home version or the Avast Professional version, … ?

Sylvain

hello
Startup Control Panel by Mike Lin looks somehow similar to RegCleaner 4.3 by Juoni Vuorie which I have been using. I downloaded Startup Control Panel but not yet used it.
What I did today is : ASHMAISV.EXE and ASHWEBSV.EXE were cleaned from the startup list in RegCleaner 4.3 and put in a link on my desktop. Just ashServ.exe was left on the startup list. I need to open manualy ash-mailserver and ash-webserver providers after boot. This gives 5 of 5 providers running.
Strange things seem to happen during nighttime, looks paranormal !

  • yesterday all was well on several Win98SE installations at several boots, but today terrible errors appeared again during first boot : explorer closed itself because of error, next boot ended in an exceptional error at … - out of range - blue screen, computer did by itself a registry scan and repair, next boot was OK.
(yesterday diskscan and defrag was done, a ash-virusscan of C: revealed a Win32Agent-AWB hidden in Daemon Tools and all the folder was deleted).
Now I am waiting for more surprises tomorrow.

have been living with that problem since October 2007 and ended up with
running The Bat mail and Firefox browser without any protection for viruses by un-installing Avast home 4.7.
Later I checked the 150 MB RAM memory for errors by running a test program for several hours, no evidence of error.
Then I happended to receive 2 rows of 250 MB RAM which replaced the before 150 MB, thus upgrading to 500 MB.
Surprising result (obtained with 3 WIN98SE installations on 3 exchangeable harddisks) : NO MORE ERRORS during boot, all runs smoothly.
