I have win xp pro Sp2, avast home 4.8, comodo firewall 3.2578, and thunderbird portable 2.0.0.
I have the following email port settings 995 SSL incoming, 587 TLS outgoing. in order for me to receive emails i have to disable avast. I tried to see if it was the firewall but it was not.
i also notice that in disabling avast my emails do not get scanned. How can i set up avast to work with thunderbird and scan my emails.
In order to receive my emails i would have to completely disable avast.
is there any way to get around this. Also i still have outlook xp install which avast scanns my emails in outlook. I will still use outlook xp until i get this issue resolved. therefore, is there any i get avast to work with thunderbird and scan my emails.
You can’t scan secured email connection (SSL and TLS) with avast. You may change port settings to unsecured, or disable pop3 scan at all. I did the second
Since SSL/TLS e-mail is encrypted and decrypted in the client, external virus scanners (including avast!) can’t read or scan it.
The solution is to pass e-mail in and out un-encrypted from your client (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, …) to a proxy program (Stunnel) that does the actual ssl or tls encryption/decryption of the pop3/smtp e-mail and communicates directly with the ISP server on the appropriate ports.
