on restart a new avast installation performed a boot check. one entry read
file c:(BACKSLASH) hiberfil.sys error OxC0000022 (access denied). Any ideas?

Yep it is a protected file so Avast will not be able to scan it. And as it is your hibernation file it is not a problem
You can add this file to the Exclusion lists:
For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
For the other providers (on-demmand scanning):
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button… 
I think the exclusion list won’t really help for the boot-time scanner.
Anyway, there’s no need to worry about this file.
