Avast Home - cable connection - XP Home w/SP 3...Not Updating

Friends got their cable company to install their new TV and then he was checking their internet connection and decided to restore their system which of course had the previously removed virus’. But when he used the system restore it removed my previous install of Avast Home but he did succeed in also restoring the virus’ that are redirecting their web searches.

So I downloaded the newest version of Avast Home and installed same. Then I wanted to update it but Avast was unable to see the internet connection with either FF or IE while I was on Yahoo and Google.
I am unfamiliar with this type of problem with Avast as mine works great.

May I impose upon some knowledgable person to script what I have to do to get Avast updated and scanning their system?

Happy Holidays & Thank you,

Jay

I suggest:

  1. Clean your temporary files.
  2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  3. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
  4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Thank you for your efforts and time. Will try this when I get their system.

Hope you had a great New Years,

Jay
