Avast Home crashes virtually all games

Hi guys

Ive recently installed Avast Home edition on my XP Home machine and initially was very impressed. However, it appears that Avast crashes virtually any game I play! Im currently playing GT Legends, TOCA Race Driver 2 plus the odd blast of Worms Armageddon, and the missus likes Tomb Raider, and all four games crash whenever Avast is running. Worms, Tomb Raider and TOCA just bomb out back to the desktop either straight away, or within a minute or two of loading the game, but when running GT Legends it instantly reboots the machine every time! If I disable Avast its absolutely fine with all games, and with other applications (Office etc) it causes no problems.

This is such a fundamental issue that Im sure some of you will have come across a similar issue, but a quick search didnt reveal anything, so any ideas?

cheers

Chris

BTW, I maybe didnt post enough tech info in the first message so this may help:

Win XP Home SP2 on an otherwise stable P4 2.4/1Gb machine
No other AV / Firewall running
Avast Home version 4.6.731, only running the On Access and Outlook modules.

cheers

Chris

Well firstly the latest version of avast is 4.6.739.

it appears that Avast crashes virtually any game I play!
How does it appear to crash it, error messager, windows event log, please expand?

What is your Standard Shield settings, Normal, High or Custom?

Yes this is a fundamental issue if it happened to everyone, but I haven’t seen much here on the forums to indicate that it is a problem accross the board.

Hmm…I play all sorts of games all the time, and I never have an issue with Avast. I play anything from Half Life 2 all the way to Ricochet, and never have an issue.

Are you using the latest drivers for your video card, update the latest patches with the games you play, and update to the latest version of Avast is the best thing I can tell you without knowing more. I even am using an older nVidia driver set cause FarCry has problems with the 77.72 drivers, and I have had no issues.

Hi

Ive tried it with two different VGA cards (one ATI and one nVidia), both with the latest drivers, with no difference.

I did get a Windows error the one time I ran Tomb Raider, but I didnt make a note of it. As to the other games, two just bomb straight back to windows without warning, and GT Legends like I said just spontaneously reboots.

There was nothing in event log when I looked after the GTL crashes other than the usual machine reboot was unexpected. I havent yet looked into it much further because I was hoping it was a bug that you guys would know about, but as its not I’ll have a further delve into it tonight.

Chris

How exactly do you “disable avast”? Does it help just to stop (or even pause) its resident providers?

Either by stopping the service or disabling the resident providers allows the games to work.
I have disabled all resident providers apart from the realtime and Outlook/Exchange modules anyway, as I dont need them.

If you just pause the providers (not stop), does it help?
