Avast Home did not find infected files!

Hi

I service a couple of home users in my neighborhood and I installed Avast on all of them because they called me when they had their systems behave strangely. Avast also found a couple of infected files which I was able to remove/delete. However, when I did a new scan with one of the free online scanners, Symantec’s scanner found 4 infected files:

  • realplay.exe [w32.spybot.worm]
  • host32.exe [w32.spybot.worm]
  • g.pif [download.trojan]
  • .pif [download.trojan]

Why did Avast not warn me of these? Makes me a tad uncertain whether I recommended the right program… or did I screw up??

Thanks for shedding some light here.

Maxx92, welcome to forums…

Did you test that files against on-line scanners? (many options here: http://www.security-ops.tk/)

Can you send that files for Alwil analysis? (virus (at) avast.com). Thanks. 8)

Hi and thanks for your reply. I did send the file to the given address. I am very curious about the outcome…

best
Marc.

If something is detected or not, depends not only on the virus database, but also on the settings in Avast.

I agree but I also expect the default settings to see as much as an online scanner. Maybe this is naive? I will re-run a more thorough scan tonight.

best. Marc.

Just to note: not all the submissions are answered.
Maybe you have luck with Karel (virus analyst) 8)
