Avast Home Edition to open Avast News Web page in Firefox not IE

I use Firefox but have Internet explorer 6 installed on my computer as well. When I open Avast anti virus program, and I click on avast news, it opens up the IE program instead of opening up in Firefox which is running at the time. How can I alter my browser preferences in Avast so that Firefox is the default browser ?

I have Windows 98, ZoneLabs Free Firewall 6.1.744.001, Dialup Internet connection, GenuineIntel PII 350 MHz, 256 MB ram, Firefox Internet browser Version 2.0.0.14, Avast Version 4.8 Home Edition build 4.8.1201

open firefox browser, click on tools then options, then advanced make sure the box at bottom is checked make sure firefox is default browser.

Firefox is already my default browser but Avast Home Edition is treating IE6 as the default browser !! I opened up Avast program again, clicked on Tools, Avast news, click here to learn more… and again the web page opened up in IE6.

It is how avast works in version 4.8 (and it wouldn’t change).
In avast 5 things will be different, i.e., IE won’t be open but the default browser.

This is because the avast news uses IE to display the news, other links should go to the default browser.

This will change in avast version 5 where it will use the default browser too.

Thank you Tech and David for solving this mystery.
Since I have Windows 98, I am wondering whether anyone knows whether Version 5 will be compatible with Windows 98 ?
I am just wary whether it will make Windows 98 crash.

No it won’t, but avast 4.8.xxxx will be retained so there is support for win95/98/ME until at least the end of the year after that hasn’t been decided.

However, I don’t know if this change, due to be included in version 5 will also be applied to 4.8.xxxx. There is at least one update which will be in 4.8.xxxx to try to resolve some update problems withwin95/98/ME, so hopefully they will include the default browser bit in the inews too.

However, the only way you will be able to install version 5 is by upgrading your OS.

I said ‘No it won’t’ in relation to your question on version 5 compatibility with win98.

Not no it won’t crash win98, because it won’t install on win98.
