I was previously using avast to scan my incoming mail when I was using Outlook 2000. Due to Microsoft not supporting OL2000 on Vista, I am going to use windows mail instead.
Does Avast home edition scan windows mail, or will it bypass it since it is not Outlook?
Yes, but you need to have the Internet Mail provider enabled.
If you aren’t using Outlook 2000 any more you won’t need the Outlook/Exchange provider enabled. Unfortunately the Internet Mail provider isn’t as flexible and configurable as the Outlook plug-in.
It all depends on the type of accounts that you use.
With the Outlook plugin all emails are scanned independent of mail account type and the type or security status of the connection to the mail server. This is far from true with the Internet Mail provider.
The Windows Mail client in Vista is just like any other mail client when it comes to POP/SMTP accounts. So the Internet Mail provider can only scan those emails that delivered on a non-secure connection (ports 110 & 25).
Hotmail/MSN (or Windows Live Mail now called) accounts are accessed in a special type of http connection (formerly called Webdav and now called DeltaSync) and these connections cannot be scanned by the Internet Mail provider.
There may be significant differences in what gets scanned.
Also, if you have GMail or other SSL protected email, you should use 3rd parties to get it scanned in actual avast version.
