For the last four weeks or so, avast! has failed to initialise at start up on my Acer laptop running XP Professional SP3.
The error section of avast’s log reports as follows :-
14/06/2008 09:34:57 SYSTEM 1344 AAVM - initialization error: AavmStart: avworkInitialize failed, 0000A438.
13/06/2008 10:51:56 SYSTEM 1252 AAVM - initialization error: AavmStart: avworkInitialize failed, 0000A438.
11/06/2008 10:54:48 SYSTEM 1368 AAVM - initialization error: AavmStart: avworkInitialize failed, 0000A438.
The reason only these dates show is that I did an uninstall and reinstall which presumably cleared the log. Automatic updates appear to be working okay, but none of avast’s “providers” run on startup and the system tray icon shows the “No Entry” symbol.
At first I thought it might be an issue with Skype, so stopped that running at startup. Avast initialised after a restart (minus Skype) but failed to initialise on the next restart. Indeed, whether I reinstall or repair avast!, whilst it works okay on the next startup, the problem then recurs on subsequent startups.
The only other noteworthy startup items are Windows Defender and LogMeIn. Windows Defender sometimes (but not always) also fails to initialise.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this problem? Is there any additional information I can provide to help with the diagnosis?
