Avast Home Screwed up

Hi I have reloaded my laptop 3 times in 2 days and have found when I install avast 4.8.1169.0 then I updated it. I go to IE and the page is blank no nothing so I read about turning of webshield that did allow IE to work either so I decided to do a system restore but its blank too.

HP nx6310 laptop
XPSP2 Professional
512 ddr2333 ram
80 sata hdd

Note I installed IE 7 and now explorer works and restore appears to be working.

What the heck happened and when.

Why don’t you install the latest 4.8.1229 instead of the old one you’re using?
Is there any other antivirus in your computer? Had in the past?
Which firewall do you use?

I really have no idea what is going on with IE7 (I have avoided installing it) but you would be advised to do a clean install of avast.

First Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

Have you tried a different browser, firefox or opera, etc. and does that work ?

What is your firewall ?

I don’t know if (I have reloaded my laptop 3 times in 2 days) you are using the laptop restore disk which would restore it to factory settings ?

If so it is possible that there is another AV installed if it came pre-installed ?

Did you mean to write … that did allow IE to work either … as you did write it … OR … did you mean to write … that did not allow IE to work neither … ???

IE must be allowed through your firewall and since you have updated to IE7, it must be allowed again.

As Tech asked, what is your firewall?
