On an MSI Mb based personal PC on a LAN with XP (including SP2) I could’nt download the Updates as the error message couldn’t find server appeared. (All other programs and the system are OK).
Setting the XP Firewall to Off made no difference and only when I set the Avast Network Shield to Off could a download occur.
This is not very conveneient and nowhere in Help can I find the details of the Shield function. Is there a setting to overcome this problem or, if do I need to set the Shield to Off in which case what protection am I losing?
It’s very strange… unless is some problem in the Network Shield module… :-\
The Network Shield is a protection against known Internet worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious contents. It can be also taken as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an IDS (Intrusion Detection System). Network Shield protects you from internet worms that spread themselves via various security holes in your system. Typicaly these kind of viruses don’t infect files but instead they attack running processes on your PC (either Windows components or some server programs like SQL Server, IIS etc.). These kind of attacks are not easily catched by ordinary antivirus during file or mail scanning. It is not a duplicate work with Standard Shield. Basically, it covers all Internet worms. Such as Win32.CodeRed, Win32.SQLSlammer, Win32.Blaster, in32.Welchia (Nachi) and Win32.Sasser.
To add to this Post there were no changes re the Network Shield. It now appears the situation was misleading as all further attempts to Update resulted in Cannot connect to Server with a Log error message. (How do I aatach this Clipboard File?)
However, if I then went to Start/Menu/Connect to Avast the Window cannot work Offline was displayed. On connect IE was run (I don’t normally use this Browser) and when this was connected I could then download the Updates.
Other programs update with the network sserver connected to the Internet, but I caanot find as to why this is a problem with Avast.
Thanks problem solved. I would note that I do not that these defaults should be set as I only update when online selected and as many of us are using other browsers eg Firebird
