avast! icon generic on Win 7 start menu

May be just temp … reboot Win may fix … but icon now generic Win. Also happens on task bar until advast is fully started unlike other programs. Windows 7 (7057) only in beta.

“C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashAvast.exe”

Because I just installed this, had to get my reg. key from advast and install… do you now download bottom advertising, or is this just a ‘one off’ for April 1st?

avast! is ready for 1 April; are you?

March 28, 2009

April 1st is a date often targeted by the creators of malware and this year will be no exception. However,if your computer’s operating system and your avast! antivirus are up to date, the risk is very small. Read more…

With the nature of the beta operating system, I don’t see this as being a big deal. Looks like something that could be fixed by a reboot.

Others have said that avast works great on windows 7, so I don’t know why the icon isn’t showing up properly…

Again, I doubt it will be a problem when Win7 goes RTM.

I have this same exact problem in Windows 7 this date 11-01-09. I just installed Win 7 yesterday and installed Avast. I noticed today I have a generic icon in the Start Menu. The icon in the Taskbar is also generic but after a few minutes it turns into the Avast blue icon.

My Win 7 isn’t Beta or RC. It is the Home Premium Retail and I did a clean install.

But the Start Menu icon stays generic.

I know this post I am replying to was from March 30, 2009 but thought I would reply so someone may see it and know that this isn’t an isolated problem to only one person.

If anyone knows why the problem and what can be done, please reply.

Hopefully Avast will see it and look into it.

Thanks,
Ed.

Hi EdSmithOH, Welcome to the forum

Basically, the start menu is a fancy way of showing a shortcut, so I am not sure whether this may or may not be an avast! issue itself.

That said, have a go at this:

Start → Right click on avast! antivirus → Properties -->‘Shortcut’ tab -->Near the bottom, there are three buttons, click ‘Change Icon’ → In the new window that opens, click browse → Navigate to, and choose this file:

C:\ProgramFiles\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashAvast.exe

Then click ok for both windows.

And hopefully, you should have your avast! icon back in the start menu.

Thanks for the reply. I did as you directed and no luck. Still the same generic icons.

In error in my last post I said that the one on the Task Bar bar was back but it isn’t. It is also still the generic icon.

It seems all was fine until I installed a couple of programs. Not sure which the last two were. I think one was Roxio 9.0 and one was Microsoft Offiice 2003. Maybe a install of them or something else created the problem.

I don’t know… it’s a puzzle to me what happened.

In previous reply I made to spg SCOTT I would like to mention that I tried his instructions again and this it worked for the icon in the Start Menu. After I did what he said this time before clicking on OK, I had to click on the icon that was displayed to select it.

Now the icon in the Start Menu is back and will see if it stays.

However, the icon in the taskbar is still the generic one. This is in Win 7 and when I right click on it I don’t get properties. You just get avast antivirus to open the program and unpin from taskbar. You can right click on the avast antivirus and get properties and I did what you said again but still generic.

So, I unpinned it from taskbar. Went back to Start Menu and told it to pin to taskbar and low and behold I now have the blue icon back in the taskbar. Hopefully both the Start Menu one and the taskbar one will stay.

Thanks for the information and help. Really appreciate it.

Ed.
