I am running avast home, but the icons are no longer in my taskbar. I have avast marked as “always show” under properties after right clicking on START, but still no luck. Thanks
If you’re using Windows 2000/XP press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager.
Check under processes tab if you see the following two processes:
ashDisp.exe
ashServ.exe
I’m running Xp, I don’t have ashDisp.exe, but I have the other one.

Go to www.excessive-software.tk
Download program called avast! External Control.
Extract it from ZIP archive anywhere you want and run it.
Select avast! Main Control.
Now select Auto-Restart avast! Antivirus Protection.
Do you get tray icons after you do this or still nothing?
It brought them back, but after restart they are gone agian and I need to do it again. Plus the little “a” does not spin all of the time. I seem to remember it doing that before. Thanks for your help! :
Hm,go to Add/Remove Programs,select avast! and then Repair.
I hope this will fix the problem.
Before Avast do you had another antivirus or seciruty software? Remove them completly escially is was another antivirus.
repair did not work. I have been running avast for about a year and it has always worked fine. no recent changes have been made to my system. Thanks for any help! 
Did you use default installation path?
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\avast4
If not,tell me full avast! install path and i’ll make you a patch that should fix the problem.
I found a Symantec file in program files, but it won’t let me delete it.

I don’t think this is related to tray icons. Try first removing all Symantec products…
I got rid of all symantec products except for the one from the previous message.
I did use the default path, as well.
Download attached file,extract it and just double-click .reg file inside.
Also click Yes when it asks you to write values to registry.
After that restart PC and see if the icons are there.

Due to problems with booting W2K, and sometimes Avast or Kerio not loading properly, I installed the StartupDelayer from 2r studios (StartDelay1.10). I made the mistake of uninstalling it while it was set to delay Avast.
After that, there was no icon in the taskbar anymore, although it could be started by doubleclick on AshDisp.exe in Avast\Data.
I checked your Registry file mendioned earlier in this thread. I could verify that this registry item was already there, so I did not reload it by your string.
All else searching was in vain, I could not determine any wrong settings, comparing two almost identical systems.
Just before uninstalling Avast and then reinstalling it, loosing all the settings by that, I just tried loading your string, knowing it would not change anything, as my registry was identical.
WOW the registry still looks the same, but the system is working perfectly now, what can you say!
