On-Access attempts to start says no service running. Here is the background - box crashed, I basically am starting from scratch. Loaded Win2K, then hardware drivers from mfr, then added SP4, then all security and critical updates, then Sygate Personal Firewall, then Avast! == The only user apps that I have loaded are s/w that came with and support external hardware I plugged in. (ext hard drives). Does any one have any ideas for me?
Dane,
I don’t have Win2K, but I would think that like under XP, avast needs the avast antivirus service to be running, and that service in turn depends on the RPC service being running. Perhaps as a starting point you could check the status of these two services. I would expect incidentally if the RPC service is not running that there would be other problems on the PC as well.
Also, after bootup has completed, when you left click on the “a” ball, I take it none of the seven shields are running. If this is the case, what exactly happens when you select a shield such as the Standard Shield and click on its Start button.
Can you also confirm that you are using the current version 4.8.1201 of avast.
If the computer could work without RPC… which I doubt.
Could be, for any reason, Sygate blocking avast functions?
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Here goes -
(Too big. trying to attach.)
I don’t see any that bad in your log…
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
- Boot.
- Install again the latest avast! version.
- Boot.
- Check and post the results.
Wilco - but do I apply for a new key or reuse my original (which it accepted a second time)? - Dane
Your key if still valid (in date) will be fine to use again.
Thank you. Your instructions worked like a charm! - Dane
