I had a computer “hang”/“stall” earlier after the windows screen. When my taskbar finally appeared, my AVAST icon was “off”.
When I clicked on the icon the AVAST On-Access Protection stayed off. Left Click gives me a RPC error. I went to Add/Remove to repair this and it didn’t work. Soo, came online…and in the meantime, my normal daily AVAST update showed up. MMmmm.
I went to my Security Center to check and is says my AVAST anti virus is updated and the virus scanning is on. (?) But my AVAST icon still will not turn on. I use ZoneAlarm as my Firewall, by the way.
I use FireFox and it is the latest version.
The last time this happened, though, was several months ago using IE 7 to perform Microsoft updates and decided to browse with it. Went to same areas I go with my FireFox… Closed down normal and later after reboot, my computer “hung”. My AVAST icon was “off” and got the same RPC error. I tried repairing my AVAST but that did not work. Performed scans with MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware. My Malware found “something” (never learned with it was) and it was removed. But had to perform a Restore Point to finally corrected the problem.
Since “restore” worked last time, tried this tactic. My computer still “hung” for a minute with no icons until all processes “kick in”. My mouse pointer works and was able to bring up my Taskmanager…to watch my processes “stall” at 20 until the rest start “kicking in”. (normally 50 are running).
I am using a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop
Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.2 gig,
WinXP SP2 Home
3 gig RAM,
320 Gig HD
Nvidia 8300 GS
I updated the 8300 GS drivers with the latest 190.62 after waiting two years to do so.
I am on 26.4 Kbps dialup and HUGE megabyte downloads literally take hours or days for me.
My computer was bought new for the business back in November 2007 and can’t afford to replace it anytime soon. Up til now, the Inspiron has been very stable.
It corrected itself after update but as you are on dial-up it takes a while to download the updates.
I see you are still running Windows Service Pack 2 so you should install Windows Service Pack 3 that has been available for over a year and contains several Critical Security updates plus performance improvements.
You need to start Internet Explorer then go to Tools then Windows Update and download all of the available updates.
Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them.
You should order the SP3 CD from Microsoft then you will be able to update to SP3 offline much quicker
