Avast in my system, I never installed it

Hi,

Recently I’m hearing on my speakers the announcement “Virus database has been updated”, which I’ve confirmed is the same one issued by Avast software.

Trouble is, I’ve never installed Avast on my machine!

Somehow it’s either incorporated in some other software, or the message itself is some kind of virus/spyware.

Has anyone ever run into this?

My guess is maybe it’s been incorporated into Firefox, but I can’t find any discussion about that.

Thanks, I appreciate your help.

this must be a joke

ps: did you download Google Pack recently ?

edit: forget it; only Google Pack Europe includes Avast 5 beta.

I wish it was a joke.
Recently, I did sign up for gmail, as well as a google group based in the UK, so maybe that’s it. Thanks for the tip.

no you don’t get the GooglePack with Avast from within the US. No avast either with a new Google account ;D . Anyway, can you check your hard disk, add/remove programs etc… to see if anything avast is installed ?

I did check for programs installed, and processes running, and services running, and nothing about Avast there. I do have my UK-based google group’s forum website on my Firefox. I will close that and see if the message goes away. Maybe it’s emanating from this website.

and you are the onlyone using that computer?..aha…no…nope…hmmm… ???

This is quite wierd… ??? Absolutely NO avast! files running?
They begin with ash or asw…

A bit of a guess, but the actual sound file for that announcement is vpsupd.wav

Try searching the computer for it, if you find it, let us know where…

I searched for that sound file, but didn’t find it. Tomorrow, when I hear the sound again, I will try to quickly close my Firefox window with the Google Group site loaded. If that cuts off the sound midway, then I’ll know that’s it. I’ll update this post with my results…

I wonder if there were any pop-up screen when the sound came out, or you missed something like is there any avast’s installation file in your computer… hem… ???
