Avast in Windows 7

Does real time protection work in Windows 7? I’m asking because I have a file on my computer that usually causes Avast to flag it as a virus as soon as I open the folder that it’s in. It doesn’t do that in Win 7. It did flag it as a virus when I scanned it though.

Yes it works.
As any beta operational system, you could have instabilities and changes.

Yes, as you will see from many of the same posts in the forums. Just do a forum search for windows 7.

What is the infected/suspect file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe - Or check the source file using notepad C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Warning.log

Does it still flag it on your computer/other system ?

Yes. In XP it always flags it when I open the folder that it’s contained in (Without me even clicking on the file). In Win7 it does nothing when I open the folder but when I right click and choose the option for Avast to scan the file it still reports it as a Trojen (It’s a file I keep there on purpose. Avast always flags it as a virus and that is how I am able to check and see if my antivirus is working properly.)

If it is just a new way that it works in Win 7 that’s fine. My main concern is the web protection. I go to a lot of different sites and sometimes Avast would protect me from sites that I would visit that may have viruses or malware on them. I just want to be sure that it would still automatically protect me when I unknowingly go to a site that may have malware and viruses on it. I would check this out myself but I don’t actually look for sites that have malware on them. I just occasionally click a link that may send me to a site that does.

Yes, but what is the malware name, file name and location of the detected file ?
If keeping a live malware on your system, use the eicar test file if it is for a specific purpose.

Normally when I click on a folder XP SP3 avast doesn’t scan anything, I have the Standard Shield on Normal, if you have it on high it may do more. There are also the essential differences between what the two OSes do when opening a folder (if you have avast set the same way in both).

I just copied the eicar test file out of my exclusions folder into a temp one, avast alerts and I opt for no action to leave the file in place in the temp location. I browse around in explorer and go back to the temp location and no alert. I can even click (highlight) the eicar.com file and no alert, but If I try to do anything to it, run or move it, bam, avast alerts. So your XP settings are doing something different to mine.

You only need to check the Viruses and Worms forum to see just how effective avast’s web shield and network shield are at protecting against malicious sites, hacked sites and exploits, etc.

Hi All,

I have to say that I have just installed windows 7 RC and at first Avast caused a few problems, it installed fine, and the on-access protection worked fine but I did find that if I tried to run a selected folders scan it just locked the machine up, so as a result I tried to find alternative antivirus solutions and of course Microsift are actively working with a few companies to help make it work solutions I have tried include the following :-

AVG - Works ok but slows computer to a crawl
The FProt security solution - Way too invasive
Norton - I won’t even go there

most of the rest you have to either pay for or are not available yet

So I reinstalled avast just now and the scan selected folders option works fine now thanks guys

Sorry for the long prelim

With regard to the hidden extensions yes I agree that they should be on by default to avoid just the problems you described ie double extension names after all it is just one tick box and there are already other options set for hidden and system files but I think definitely that the “Hide Extensions for known filetypes” should be off by default.

As Avast Home Edition seems to work fine I’ll leave it installed

If you feel that I have hijacked your thread, I apologise and Moderators please feel free to move it to another section if necessary

Anyway just my 2cent’s worth

It looks like it works. I just entered the folder and tried to move the file and got a flag. It must have something to do with the way Win 7 works with folders and files.

It certainly looks that way, but I still find it strange that your XP and avast works diferently to mine.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes it does, I am very new to the Windows 7 OS as I never used Vista before I just moved straight to 7 from XP as I understand it, Windows 7 is similar to Vista with all the errors corrected but I am still playing with it to try to understand it better so far I like what I see
