Avast Installation Help

[size=10pt]

I installed avast 4 home for a friend of mine on her computer and it downloaded and installed up to the finall install part. The install meter was at the end and it said (vps) thats where it would like just kept running the process and not finish. I downloaded the program 2 times, both from different sites and both times it did the same thing. The computer in question that its going on is a older computer. Heres the system specs:

win xp home 2002

amd-k6
3D processor 500mhz
312Mb Ram

I was thinking on getting another antivirus but other antivirus programs that I looked at are bigger and not as good as avast. And I dont think will run if avast will not. Any help would be appreciated

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download and save to disk the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Download, save to disk and install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Was there any other antivirus before avast in this computer?

This is the real story on this, My friend has the computer and I just do the maintenance for it when she needs. She is 85 years old and is not computer literate. She had someone put win xp pro on this comp. Well come to find out, It was a illegal copy of xp and it almost crashed her comp. I had to get her to buy a legal copy of win xp home with service pack 2. I yesterday, Installed it and put her verizon dsl on it and I’m in the process of doing the win updates witch was freezing to. I told her she my need to upgrade her comp. And her response is that she really doesn’t want to upgrade it. And before all this happend she had dial up on it and win 95. She also claims that before the win xp pro and verizon dsl was put on, she wasn’t having these kinda problems. I know when she had win 95 and dial up the only problems she would en cure was cookie clutter and windows clutter in witch i kept clean for her. I think that the xp version is really bogging her system down. But can you run win 95 and have verizon dsl? I will probably be going to try again put avast on again and do what you said about putting the uninstaller and the installer on disk. I surely will keep posted on this matter.

XP will hardly run in a 312Mb RAM system and 500MHz of CPU clock… it’s too old.
If she does not need XP, keep 95 and install avast (maybe the only antivirus that keep Windows 95 compatibility…). I don’t know if Verizon DSL could be run with Windows 95.

She doesnt have win 95 install disk. And plus you really just cant go out and “buy” 95 in the stores. You have to get it online and then you have to wait for the disk to arrive then install it. I dont live near her. I live in Cumberland,Md. And she lives in College Park,Md. And also I will be leaving on monday to go back to Cumberland. I am going at 5:30pm towork on the computer again. Do you have msn messenger maybe we can talk? I will keep posted

I have… but I’d rather you use the forum. So other users can help in parallel.

To update you on the issue with avast, I uninstalled and installed (from disk) avast home. It still didn’t work. I went ahead and installed pc tools “antivir”, And I know its not the greatest program, But it will accommodate her needs for the time being till she really decides to either upgrade or get a new pc. Thanks again for the help!

Does it work with Windows 95?

I didnt install win 95.She spent $200.00 for win xp home service pack 2 to be put on her computer. I installed it 2 days ago.The pc tools “antivir” is running on the xp home service 2 now. I will monitor the system performance and stability of her computer. If she starts to have freezing or program problems again like she did, I will just get a copy of win “98” or “me” and put it on her computer. But it seems for now its running OK for her…but a slow processor rate…and she is OK with it being slow… so until then yanno…If shes happy…I am too for the time being :o

I couldn’t get a copy of win 95 off anywhere online in the time I had to be there. I checked online for a copy maybe to download and install it and have the company send through the mail the disk and key. I didn’t find one. But my sister in law says she has a win 95 or 98 disk but she has to find it.
