avast installer wizard don't advance

I have Windows XP SP3.
I uninstalled avast 7 Internet Security because machine was very slow.
I used Control Panel.

I re-installed demo versión from avast.com (7.0.1456.418).
Installer wizard started and at message:

Installing, please wait…
avast! Firewall

Wizard don’t show nothing, I don’t know if it is working or not.
Wizard disconnected machine from Internet.
I was waiting until one hour and aborted installation.
I made click in Cancel, Wizard alerted but kept without to close. Don’t say nothing more.
I should abort using Task Admin.
I uninstalled (or what Wizard had installed) using avast uninstaller (aswclear.exe) and Windows in Safe Mode.
I tried to install several times but keep the same situation… seems to be freeze but no freeze, simply not advance.
And disconnect from Internet.

¿What should I do to install avast?

hey did you reboot your system before you tried the installation?

any other security programs on your system?

it could also be that you have been hit by a malware that’s prevents avast from installing. you could follow this guide and with for a malware expert to have lock at it and see if that’s the case.

Thanks mikaelrask for help.

Yes, I reboot after uninstallation and installation, each time.
I used MBAM before, scaned and none infection showed.
Seems to be an issue with Firewall component of avast, which disconnect from Internet and keep working (don’t stop) without signal to keep walking through installation…

I will try your suggestion on guide and report after that.

When you used the Avast Uninstaller Tool in Safe Mode, did you uninstall both the AIS (firewall) and the Avast Free/Pro versions, then reboot your machine?

Here is the proper way to uninstall and reinstall cleanly:

  1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:

Version 7.0.1456:
Avast Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD or desktop.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast you had on this machine.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy for Free online.
Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know how this goes.

mikaelrask, I ran OTL, ASWCLEAR and FSS tools.
ASWCLEAR crashed and cannot register log.
Because restrictions to attachments I attached them in following messages.
Here goes OTL log.

SafeSurf, I made all steps mentioned by you.
BTW I talk about AVIS, no Free.
I suppose with Free version no problem, because Firewall component is the problem.
Maybe trying to install Free version and after with license upgrade to AVIS, I’ll try and report you.

Thanks both for help.

Here goes Extras log from OTL.
And FSS log.

Thanks.

Here go images from ASWCLEAR crash.
Thanks.

Aonris.

I am going to ask Essexboy, Avast! resident malware remover to take a look at your OTL and see if aswmbr may work. Stad by.

Whilst I check the log you will need to uninstall F-Secure

From control panel Uninstall F-Secure
Then download and run the removal tool from here ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/support/tools/uitool/UninstallationTool.zip

Also Norton - removal tool https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=english&ct=us

Then run a fresh OTL scan please

Here is OTL log, once f-secure and norton tools ran.

On completion of this could you try a clean install of Avast and let me know of any errors

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

Thanks essexboy,
Before to apply the fix recommended I tried to install AVIS again and was successfull.
At installation (again at Firewall component) appeared following window with alert message:

The software you are installing for this hardware: VirtualBox Bridged Networking Miniport has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.

I pressed Continue Anyway and AVIS Wizard installation finished.
I don’t know if this alert has to see with Oracle VirtualBox (I have it installed and it is the only software where I saw this alerts at installation).
AVIS works fine now. Some slow but acceptable. I consider other factors (memory, process) are affecting CPU performance. It is not an issue exclusive of AVIS.

BTW It is interesting to know how do you get recommendations to do using OTL tool. However I don’t perceive what will your script do. I would like to learn more about the tool. Where do I get a manual?

Thanks for help, I appreciate sincerely.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/277391-otl-tutorial-how-to-use-oldtimer-listit/ there is an OTL brief tutorial here

The OTL fix was to remove old antivirus remnants
