Avast interface will not run in Vista

I just did a clean install of Vista Enterprise, and fully updated it from MS Update service. Then installed MS Office XP and Outlook 2003.
Rebooted - all working perfectly.
Logged in as the administrator, installed Avast Home - the install completed OK, and rebooted.
Then started the Avast program. After the memory check completes the Avast splash screen disappears and the UI is not displayed. Also I do not see the Avast “a” ball icon in my start bar icons.
Avast appears to be running because when I start Outlook I see the Avast email protection splash window for a couple of seconds. I just cannot start the Avast program.

Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
Bob

This is frequently associated with the presence or remnants of another AV. However since you say this is after a clean install of Vista, that is very strange. Was this clean Vista install via a manufactures OEM installation/Recovery disk as that could come with trial versions of an AV ?

What happens if you run the file directly, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimpl.exe ?

Sorry I cant be much practical help I don’t use Vista at all.

After rebooting again (2nd time after registering), all appears to be working OK now. Thanks for the help.
