I recently installed Avast 4.7 Home edition. Afterwards, I was no longer able to work with Yahoo webmail. Whenever I tried to do something, the program would freeze and there was no way I could get out of it or even close the window. When I restarted my computer again and suspended Avast, I was able to use Yahoo mail without any problems.
I am running Windows XP. I don’t have any other antivirus software. I am just using the XP firewall right now.
Can anyone provide any tips on how to fix this situation? Does Avast conflict with the XP firewall? Are there any firewalls that it is more compatible with?
Are you using any email program or just your browser?
No, for sure not.
More compatible? Impossible.
Although, any other firewall is compatible with avast because it’s only an antivirus and not a firewall. Good ones? Comodo is my choice.
I have one question. Do you use “old” yahoo mail or beta one? because sometimes beta version of yahoo mail can cause some problems itself and sometimes it is not system related. I’m using yahoo mail beta without any problems, except whose caused by yahoo itself as it’s beta.
I am using the Yahoo beta version. I use it on other machines and don’t have any problem. I can even use it on my machine and don’t have a problem once I disable Avast. That’s what makes me believe it has something to do with Avast. Did you have to change anything to get it to work with your webmail? Thanks.
Well I’m sure if you reversed that logic and used the non beta version of Yahoo and avast it would work as well. That is the problem with any conflict there are two or more sides to a conflict, remove one and it will work, but that doesn’t mean that is the cause, just that the conflict has gone.
Do you happen to use a proxy to connect to the internet ?
You shouldn’t disable avast completely as that would leave you vulnerable. First try terminating the Network Shield and see if that makes any difference. If not then terminate the Web Shield and see if that works.
You could also try to manually set your browser to use the web shield proxy. Star the Web Shield, Customize, Basic tab, on the Redirected HTTP port(s): remove the 80, click OK on your way out.
I access my Yahoo beta account (and my Yahoo old style account) many times a day without any problems and have been doing so since Yahoo introduced the beta accounts. I suspect there may be another factor involved as suggested by Tech and David.
