So I really don’t know where to put this so I am going to throw it here, If I have my internet on, I cannot run my avastsvc.exe. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, I have allowed access through the firewall for both the ui and svc and it still does not work. Once I disconnect from the internet, then I am able to run all programs. Anyone have any resolution for this?
What avast! version number are you using, e.g. Free/Pro/AIS/Premier - 10.0.2208 ?
What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
My OS is a Window-7 64bit SP-1, Alienware M16x V2.5.54. I use windows Firewall and the Avast firewall, nothing really special. I removed both items from the firewall, but it never reasked permission after I restored internet access. I readded it to exceptions list. How can I figure out if avastSvc.exe has internet access? It only runs when the internet is not on…
Avast is internet security, version: 2015.10.0.2208
Other things that are happening: It says all my shields are active (avastsvc.exe is not appearing in my process log and the service is stopped) If I attempt to run service, I am prompted for admin run, I accept it still doesn’t run. When it disables itself I cannot view current virus definition version or current version of avast.
The avastSvc.exe is the main avast service and controls various scanners - crucially the web shield - if a firewall is blocking the avastSvc.exe then the web shield redirection won’t work.
How to see if avastSvc.exe has internet connection - This appears to be no internet connection, not that the web shield (via avastSvc.exe) is being blocked.
Something to try:
From the avastUI > Settings > Active Protection > Web Shield - Customise and uncheck the Scan HTTPS option and OK your way out. You may (or may not) need to stop and restart the web shield for this change to take effect.
The windows 7 firewall shouldn’t be needed if the avast firewall is installed. The windows 7 firewall has outbound protection, but it is disabled by default. Unless you enabled it, then it shouldn’t be blocking the avastSvc.exe (including the web shield scanner).
I don’t use the avast Internet Security program, so I’m not familiar with the avast firewall - if you can check in the firewall logs you should be able to see the activity for avastSvc.exe.
So, I have done a little bit more digging and went into regedit… what is the default binary supposed to be? Mine says it is not set, is that an issue?
Also, I tried what you suggested it did nothing for me…
That won’t tell you if it is connecting to the internet - if there was something in the registry (which I doubt) that stopped it running, I believe you would see this in the form of the avast shields not be working and alarm bells (well little popups that all wasn’t well) going off.
If it is running as it should then you would see it working in the Task Manager - but that wouldn’t tell you it is connecting to the internet either. That as I said would or should come from your firewall logs or some other utility that monitors internet traffic.
Edit: example of my firewall.
I don’t think it is my firewall at all now… I disabled both my fire walls, ran avast disconnected from wireless network, re-opened wireless network and it turned off entirely. I checked all my logs, and avastsvc.exe is allowed to run… It still says all my shields are running but my background service isn’t…
Haven’t the time to read this. Have you attempted a full reinstall of Avast?
Where are you seeing that the background service (avastSvc.exe) isn’t running ?
As without avastSvc.exe running the shields (which it controls) shouldn’t be running and avast should be indicating this.
Check the windows services - Windows key + R (windows Run) type services.msc into the text entry point and Enter. This should list the services and if they are running or not.
Avastsvc.exe is not running under processes (with all program view enabled) services tab on task manager tab says it is stopped, services doesn’t indicate it is started. Full uninstall/reinstall done already.
In the services.msc does it indicate that it should have started Automatically - or does it have another setting, Manual or Disabled ?
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What other security based programs do you have installed - anti-spyware, firewall, etc. ?
Did you use the avast uninstall utility in this ‘full uninstall/reinstall’ ?
it is in automatic, it is not set to manual or disabled.
I have been using avast for 10 years. I installed the 2015 model and this all started.
I only use the windows programs. Defender doesn’t work, so its disabled, MSE is disabled.
Yes, and used the instructions from avast.com w/ regards to safemode.
Edit:
I am going to redo the uninstall and installation… I’m going to figure out if what Einstein said about insanity is true…
Edit 2:
Still didn’t work. Same issue.
Defender in Windows 7, is only anti-spyware and disabling it should be enough as it can’t be uninstalled as it is integrated into win7.
However, MSE should be completely uninstalled not just disabled as a resident antivirus application it will have drivers running. This is an area were conflict can occur, I don’t know for sure that this is a contributory factor, but it should be uninstalled to ensure there is no possibility of conflict.
If you use the avast uninstall utility, you run it from normal mode and it handles the boot into safe mode - so I’m not sure if this is what you meant.
