It wouldn’t let me connect to the Internet unless I disabled the web shield. Any settings i should set it to so i can leave the web shield on while surfing the internet?
So why not start with downloading and install latest version and see if that fixes it ?
Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.677 http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
Oh, I’m sorry. I forget I upadated it yesterday to 5.0.677
do you have a firewall ?
Having updated a program, components are going to have changed, if those require internet connections then your firewall would ask you about the changes (or a good one would ask).
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
I opened up Control Panel and then viewed the Windows Firewall, I didn’t see avastSvc on the exceptions list so I added it. But it still didn’t work.
You are using windows XP, yes ?
If so it provides zero outbound protection so shouldn’t block anything, as you can see from your image, this relates to blocking incoming network traffic.
So there is something else in the mix. Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?
Since you previously had a pre-release/beta version 5.0.377 I would suggest that you do a clean reinstall:
-
Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.677 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
-
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
-
- Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
