Avast Internet Security 5.0 Problems

I hope someone can help me!

I bought AIS 5.0 and it sucks that I can’t even used it. I’m running windows XP 32 bit and I’ve used Avast Anti Virus before without a problem. What happens is that I’ll install it, use the license key, and watch it install on my system. I make sure windows firewall is off and there is nothing conflicting. When Avast tells me to restart my system, I do it. Unfortunately, it won’t reboot normally after I do so. I can only boot windows in safe mode. The only wake I can fix things is to system restore prior to installing avast. I’ve tried this several times, but each time it won’t boot windows normally.

Anyone can help?

Maybe try a complete removal of all Avast products in safe mode, and running the removal tools might do the trick.

You would need the full installation file for the Avast 5 suite, for later offline installation, before removing your AV. (So you can install an AV on an unprotected computer, without having to go online to download it.)

Get both uninstall utilities (for both versions) here.
Get the full installer file from here (if you don’t have it already.
You will need your license key.
Go offline, into safe mode (since that seems to be the only mode that works) and run each uninstall utility in turn. Reboot after each time. Reboot into normal mode, and install AIS 5.
Go online, get updates, enter the license.
Does this work?

No go. I did all of that and I still get the SAME thing when I try to boot normally. I noticed, just before windows boots that a BSOD occurs, then my comp automatically restarts and asks for safe mode. :-\

I already miss Avast 4.

Have you ever had another type of AV or firewall on this computer? Even if uninstalled in the past.

I had Kapersky once. But that should be irrelevant since I did a full system restore about a week ago. Wiped everything clean. Avast is the only thing I’ve tried to put on the system and windows firewall is disabled.

Running out of options, eh?

If you meant “format and re-install”, then it did wipe everything clean.
If you actually meant a system restore, then it did not necesarily wipe the things that need to be wiped, and some cleanup/removal tools should be run.
Here is a link for many removal tools (courtesy fredvries) and any appropriate should be run.

But if you meant format and reinstall, then I’m at a loss to understand it, sorry.

Yeah. I meant format and reinstall. As in wipe clean everything and install windows from the ground up.

Thanks for your help though. Much appreciated.

Have you installed all the Windows updates (including SP3) before installing Avast? Bit of a long shot, but might make a difference, and good practice, anyway.
Until you are able to resolve this, why not continue using 4.8?
It still provides the same excellent protection it always has.

Know where I can get a copy of 4.8? I didn’t see it available on the website.

Looks like the home version of 4.8 has been removed from the official site, but you can get the pro here, I think it may revert to the home when the trial is pu (60 days), or go to the FileHippo page for Avast here and download the earlier version.
