Hi guys…I am having a problem connecting to the Internet with one of my computers, on which I have Avast Internet Security 5.1.889 installed. I know this is probably a simple fix, but I am unsure what to do, and I do not have access to this PC everyday, so the next time I use it I would like to remedy the problem.
On this PC…
OS: Windows XP SP3
Internet Browser: Internet Explorer
And I connect to the Internet through a router (I am thinking this is why my problem is occurring).
Every time I try to access the Internet (via cable modem) I get that generic message everyone knows… “this web page cannot be displayed…blah blah blah.” I’m thinking it must be a problem within my firewall exceptions because every time I disable the avast firewall and re-enable the Windows firewall, I can access web pages with no problem. Also, which I thought was strange…If I have BOTH the Windows and Avast firewalls enabled, it allows me access (and I know NOT to leave both firewalls running, as it can cause conflicts and other problems). Also, I wanted to keep my firewall setting on Default (“Work” setting)…if i change it to the “Home” setting I can access the net, but I figured my computer would not be as well protected.
If anyone knows what to do in this situation, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
Download the latest version of avast AIS 6.0.1000 and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode for 5.x, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
