Today i had installed Avast Internet Security 8.0.1489, on every restart of my computer
Avast Internet Security 8.0.1489 takes more then 60 seconds to start-up and show the task-bar Avast icon, which is very frustrating at times.
Is there any solution to load Avast faster at start-up, let me know if anything can be done
what antivirus did you use before installing avast?
did you remove it before installing avast?
did you run the vendors removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict?
tools found here. http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Today, i formatted my PC and then install all the programs and Avast, the only security which i have now on my PC and i don;t have any programs during start up and i don;t use StartUP lite
for more information, i have WinXP Professional SP3, 1GB RAM. Is there anyone who can help me with this problem “Avast Internet Security 8.0.1489 takes more then 60 seconds to start-up and show the task-bar Avast icon”
done, as you mentioned, but still Avast take 60 seconds to load and show icon in taskbar, this is the same problem i am facing with Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, so i thought to switch to Avast Internet Security 8.0.1489, but its the same problem with Avast too. I don;t know what to do know?
Whilst you may not see the avast tray icon, it isn’t part of the security side of avast, just the access to the program. On occasion my tray icon takes a little time to appear (not 60 seconds though), but if you open the task manager you will probably see it is running, avastUI.exe. You should also see the main avast service/function avastSvc.exe. If you catch it (start task manager) early enough you may also see some other avast functions avast.setup checking for virus signature updates (VPS).
Given that the times are broadly similar so there must be something else in the mix, which causes scan activity, other security based software, anti-spyware, Windows Defender, etc. ?
My spec is broadly similar to yours, but I used to have 2GB on this XP System and a couple of months ago I upgraded that to 4GB (the max for XP 32bit). Given this is an XP Pro system I would say it might be under resourced for all that you may have running on it, so there is likely to be a lot of swapping data in and out of memory to the hard disk pagefile.sys. If you can upgrade your RAM to 2gb or even 4gb that should improve overall system responsiveness.
What is the CPU that you have ?
Check the programs that you have installed and be strict on what you allow to run on boot (many don’t need to be), Operating System processes, Security based software and absolutely essential programs only. Boot is a busy time and the more programs you have loading the 1GB of RAM you have won’t be able to cope and had to swap out data in memory to the hard disk.
If it is a problem its one I’ve had ever since I started using Avast. My Avast desktop icon takes a minimum of a minute to appear and to improve to that sort of speed I pared everything I was certain it was safe to stop running at start up to a minimum two years ago.
Saying there are no programs running at start up is one thing but just as DavidR recommended I’d still check what IS actually running using MSConfig or CCleaner and Autoruns. Disable anything unnecessary and if you’re not sure what can and shouldn’t be stopped ask here because I’m certain somebody will be able to help.
I’d also turn off auto-updates for Windows, in fact turn off everything but Avast updates. If you have an always on internet connection checking for/installing those updates can slow down the desktop boot considerably.
Of course if you do this you must discipline yourself to a maintenance regime which includes updating those things manually.
My feeling is that this, only in comparison, slow boot ‘problem’ is likely a RAM issue as DavidR also suggseted and that if your BIOS supports it you should increase it to the maximum <4GB WinXP allows.
Another possible solution would be to fit a SSD to replace the HDD. Again it’s an option probably not open to my old laptop and I think I’ve read there can be problems with WinXP and support for SSDs in general but if one can be fitted it would definitely improve boot time.
Installing an SSD isn’t an option for everyone, especially those with winXP, whilst I believe there is a way of doing it, SSDs aren’t supported in the OS natively (for obvious reasons).
It’s not a RAM issue. I have had the same problem since installing Avast 8 Free. Other versions were fine. I have 8gb of RAM along with an AMD quad core 3.84ghz CPU running Win 7 64bit. I build and repair computers so I do know what to enable or disable during Windows boot up. I run a clean and fast system. Avast 8 Free just slows it to a crawl during a cold boot. One the system is booted and Avast finishes releasing my computer all is well until the next cold boot. Changing settings in Avast to let Windows boot first has no effect on the problem. The only time the problem goes away is when I uninstall Avast 8 Free and try another antivirus program. Then doing a proper uninstall of that program and reinstalling Avast 8 Free brings the problem right back again. While I still love Avast and recommend it on all the systems I build/repair I think the program has become too bloated. Just like what happened to AVG years ago. I have seen this boot up slowness on Windows 7 32bit and 64bit systems as well as Win XP systems.
My answer/s were directed to the Original Poster (OP) who doesn’t have the same specification as your system. He also states that this is the same with KIS installed, Reply #10, so his situation differs from yours.
i installed avast free after giving it a rest for over 2 years, and my boot time increased dramatically. (was using panda cloud, uninstalled
& cleaned properly). i checked here and saw the same problem. the good news is that it’s not my computer to blame. the bad news is that avast slows my computer too much. browsing is also very sluggish. sadly, the avast i knew is gone.
