The recent program upgrade forced me into “Internet Security” trial for 2 weeks.
I don’t like it at all and I want out of the trial.
Manually disabling the firewall and safezone leads to warning triangle sign in Avast tray icon.
This is bad since I only care about the AV and now I can’t tell by glance if the AV is ok or not.
This is quite annoying, and even more annoying that I was forced into this.
Now, I’ll be completely honest - I don’t want any of the internet security features. At all. For any price. I don’t want your firewall. I don’t want your safezone. I wouldn’t take it for free, and I certainly don’t want to pay for it.
Here’s the deal - I’m willing to pay for a no nonsense AV from you guys, even though it’s currently free.
I’m willing to pay anywhere up to 10$ annually, if you just promise to never ever bug me about “Internet Security” bullshit at all. No forced trials. No shiny buttons. I don’t care for it. I never will. I’m willing to pay to never ever see it again.
Sadly, there’s currently no ‘pure AV’ pricing plan.
During the program update process, you’re offered the ability to try the paid version (usually in large letters)
or to continue to use the free version.
Please remember that there is a difference between upgrade and update. You will have to pay for the first option and,
the second option allows you to continue to use the free version of avast!
I appreciate everyone’s concern for my computer-savviness, yet it is misplaced.
I can dodge my way around Big Shiny Buttonstm like a pro.
On that note, I find it sad someone would consider “you were fooled, not forced” as legitimate defense of a shoddy marketing/
One of the main reasons I have used Avast for half a decade now, is the no-bullshit approach, compared to competitors.
In retrospective I should have picked a better topic title.
My adventures with the trial is not the point here.
It was merely the circumstances that pushed me to post what I have long contemplated.
I would like an option to support Avast without adding stuff I was never interested in.
A ‘paid’ free Avast. I’m willing to pay the 20$. I just don’t want anything else.
The point is, you weren’t forced, which is what you said.
We all see the same dialogs you did. Once you get to know Avast you start to realize you have to read every dialog more carefully than you’d think you would have to with a security program. Maybe it’s their way of training us for the real world, I don’t know.
Here are a couple of suggestions…
Run the Add / Remove Programs entry for Avast and choose Change. Uncheck all the tools in the center column that you don’t want. The three shields are of prime importance. The other stuff is fluff.
If you don’t want the paid version, just uninstall it fully using the Avast_clean tool, reinstall the free version, and watch out in the future for misleading dialogs.
Maybe it’s time to realize that only Non Profits and Governments can do things without having to pay for them.
Even the free version of avast! cost Avast money. Our acceptance of some of what they offer helps to defray that cost.
(You have the right to refuse any of the items offered)
The next paid version will give you the ability to bypass all add ons and popups.
Any program you install requires reading what is offered. Why should it be any different in installing avast! ???
This isn’t meant to be harsh but something that we all need to start following.
