Avast Internet Usage

Hello there  As i am new to this forum please excuse any irregularities i may produce.
I have enjoyed avast for many years now, and i was pleasantly surprised with this new version. Well done to the development crew :-*
I have Windows XP Home Edition with SP3 and have found no issues or conflicts occurring with the Avast Product Version : 5.0.507
I also have installed on my computer a small Task Manager addon called “Prio” from :- http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html please check it out as it’s a very trustworthy compliment for monitoring internet traffic. While i was monitoring the TCP/IP Tab I noticed a very concerning amount of internet connectivity occurring with Avast - For each and every web page i open up in my Opera Web Browser, I see multiple TCP/IP connections occurring with Avast as it monitors and sends/receives data from the internet. Now i wouldn’t be concerned about this normally as i gather it is an acceptable method of monitoring and protection from nasties on the net -BUT- What i have discovered is rather concerning to me as Avast seems to be chewing through my bandwidth at an alarming rate and is therefore costing me money as i have an internet cap of only 10GB/Month and i get charged for every MB over that cap. Now to clarify what i mean i will attach a link to pastebin here that will display the connectivity that i am concerned about. What you need to look very closely at is the speedIn and the SpeedOut columns and also the total amount of bytes sent/received column. What you will see is that Avast has been connecting at a much higher speed than the web browser can - approx 3x the speed and it also receives (approx 5x) the amount of data used by the web browser and this statistic “Increases” each and every time a new tab is opened in the browser especially when i start a download or stream a youtube video for example. And this occurrence is NOT applicable to only Opera - I have tested and monitored this occurrence with I.E. ; Firefox ; Google Chrome and it is the same effect happening with each and every browser that i tested with.
Can someone please explain to me why Avast is doing this and if there is any way of stopping it from chewing up all of my bandwidth please ?
Pastebin link :- These are quickly taken screenshots of the connectivity occurring at the start of opening up a youtube video in Opera.

Please note: if you add up ALL of the Avast connections “Received” you’ll soon see that it is approx 4x the total amount received by the Opera Browser. Should it not at the very least Equal it ?

Avast Web Shield is a HTTP proxy, meaning that all the traffic from your browser is redirected to it, and it makes all the communication with the outside world on behalf of the browser. Since it’s a local proxy (running on the same system), it won’t take any of your permitted bandwidth.
