My wifes computer keeps nagging her to that avast 4.8 home free edition is about to expire and suggests that she upgrade to the newer version. Because I know that the newer version is buggy I do not want to update…I applied for a new registration key and successfully inserted the key into avast 4.8…however…ther nag screen persists.
Does anyone know how to stop the nags or should I try reinstalling avast 4.8?
Thanks
The new version isn’t buggy at all.
Why don’t you test it?
Support for avast 4.8 will end by the end of 2010.
Thanks for the help. I had avast home free 5.0 installed in my home machine and it kept stopping with a little x over the tray icon saying the system was unsecured. It would start back up when I hit fix but it was rather annoying. A search of the internet and the avast web site confirms that I am not the only one having problems. I uninstalled 5.0 and reinstalled 4.8 and my problems went away. I hope avast will continue to support 4.8 until the bugs are worked out. Until then, you did not even try to answer my original question. Thanks
I suggest an installation from scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results.
I had 4.8 for awhile in my XP sp3 …I Installed the Avast 5…I think it’s awesome …no problems whatsoever…But I downloaded the Uninstall tool for 4.8 and made sure it was completely gone…and did a search for it in my registry…and in windows files…than did a scan wih Eusing free reistry cleaner and CCleaner and than put 5 in…and It’s awesome…way beter, interfaze, look, settings, scans are 7 minutes quick and about 12 minutes full scan…the only one takes a little longer is Boot scan… you can even choose what setings are password protected…You can set your settings to …automatically after a scan do actions by itself…Like send to Virus chest or delete or repair…all you do is click scan… Also it’s more Organized…well luck with whatever you choose after all they’re both Avast…
Daris, welcome to avast 5
